WELCOME
Mad Artists' Entertainment is thrilled to present The Importance of Being Earnest.
NOTE ON INTIMACY: Several roles will require a moderate level of on-stage romantic contact such as hand-holding, embracing, hugging, and kissing on the hands, face, or mouth.

Synopsis:
John Worthing is leading a double life. In his posh London flat, he’s known as the dashing and playful Ernest, but in his country estate he’s simply the responsible and respectable Jack. When his charming and trouble-making best friend Algernon discovers John’s schemes, he takes on his own alternate identity and poses as Jack’s brother leading to a complex series of misunderstandings and farcical situations. Oscar Wilde’s enduring 1895 comedy playfully skewers the mannered conventions of social class, marriage, gender, and religion with charm and wit.

The Characters:
Algernon Moncrieff (“Algy”): Late 20s – 30s He is a dashing man-about-town, good-looking, charming and thoroughly sophisticated. His taste in clothes is impeccable.
John Worthing, J.P. (“Jack”): Late 20s – 30s He, too, is a good-looking man-about-town, but a little more serious-minded, and he lacks some of Algy’s brittle sophistication.
Lane (Algy’s Manservant): 50 and up Lane is the perfect manservant, unquestioning and never smiling.
Lady Bracknell (A Woman of Importance): 50 and up She is a woman of ample proportions, the ultimate in a dowager of high society. Lady Bracknell never lacks for words, and she makes every word count, savoring each one down to the last syllable.
Hon. Gwendolen Fairfax (Lady Bracknell’s daughter): 20s – 30s Gwendolen is an attractive, charming, straightforward girl who is in love with Jack and determined to marry him in spite of all obstacles.
Miss Prism (Cecily’s Tutor): 50 and up She is a plain, spinsterly-looking woman in her fifties, whose only passion, apparently, is a devotion to her work.
Cecily Cardew (Jack’s Ward): Early 20s – 30s She is just eighteen, pretty, impressionable and romantically inclined.
Merriman (butler to Jack): 50 and up He is the perfect butler, efficient and unassuming. Rev.
Canon Chasuble, D.D. (Rector of Woolton): 50 and up He is a slightly pompous, stuffy man with a romantic eye for Miss Prism.
